The Ge’ez script (also known as fidel) has a two thousand year history in the East African highlands and the Red Sea region. It lives on as the writing system for several modern African languages, spoken by millions of people in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and beyond. These include Amharic, Tigrinya, and Gurage. Ge’ez is a unique, African writing system, which shares features with Arabic, Hindi, and even Japanese.
